Label and Organize Your Electrical Panel for Safety and Simplicity

If you are a property owner, you have multiple responsibilities in order to keep your place functioning properly. One of the tasks that should be on your list for a new place is checking out the electrical panel to make sure that it is easy to understand and use. Breakers get flipped now and again, and you need to be able to quickly get it fixed.

While you can note one that is turned the wrong direction, you do not always have that luxury when the power goes out in one part of the home. Sometimes, it is necessary to flip it back and forth yourself in order to make sure that it is working right again. If you don’t know which one to flip, you will have to keep going through them until you do. This means that you will have a quick disruption in the power throughout your home.

The results of that mean going around and resetting clocks, timers and other things that don’t have a battery backup system in place. What an incredible waste of time that is for you to do! Instead, if you have your electrical panel properly organized and labeled, it will be a breeze for you to take care of that.

So, how do you go about doing this? In some cases, you will find that labels are already in place when the electrician installed the electrical panel. You can confirm the accuracy of these when you first move in to prevent unpleasant surprises down the line related to mislabeled breakers.

By checking where each one leads and including a clear label, you will quickly be able to tell where the power supply is headed in your home. If you need to shut the power off in one area, this information will also be very useful to you.

You need to make sure that you use the right kind of labels and ink so that the messages don’t get smeared from moisture, handling and other events that might occur. Your home printer will not be a good idea unless you have a laser printer because ink runs very, very easily when wet.

Make certain that your notations include sufficient information for you to know all of the major and minor areas affected by the switch. For instance, many people will just put something like “bathroom” on the label. However, you might discover that one or more outlets in that room are actually connected to a different one on an adjoining wall. This type of double checking will help to reduce confusion and problems later down the line.

You might even consider drawing out an electrical blueprint of your home and creating a list showing exactly where the routes run. This will allow you in to easily track where power is coming from and you or a future electrician from Warren that may inspect your property to diagnose any type of electrical issues you are having. Then, you can use numbers to indicate the location of the switches. Laminate the print and keep with the electrical panel for easy use.

This is one of the things that you must take care of as a responsible homeowner.
